Building Instagram reach: what really works in 2026
Short answer: In 2026, Instagram reach comes almost entirely from reels that reach people who don't follow you yet. If you regularly publish short, real videos that give people a reason to keep watching in the first two seconds, you grow. If you post photos and pin your hopes on hashtags, you no longer grow. The rest is consistency, a clear focus and the willingness to stick with it for three to six months.
Why reach comes about differently today
Instagram no longer shows your posts primarily to your followers; it suggests them to people who are interested in similar content. This applies above all to reels. A single reel can therefore reach more people than your entire follower count. Conversely, this means: without reels, hardly anyone who doesn't already know your account will see it.
What matters is not the number of followers but how many people view a post, watch it to the end, save it or share it. These signals decide whether Instagram keeps recommending the reel. This is exactly where every lever we describe below comes in.
The six levers that bring reach
Reels instead of photos
A reel is suggested to strangers; a photo is usually only shown to your followers. If reach is the goal, the question of format is settled.
The first two seconds
People scroll on before they read. The opening has to show why the video is worth watching: a question, a result, a look behind the scenes.
Consistency over perfection
Three solid reels a week beat one elaborate reel a month. The algorithm rewards accounts that deliver reliably, and people remember faces they see more often.
A topic people recognise
If you post everything, you get suggested for nothing. A clear focus helps Instagram understand who it should show your content to.
Think local
For businesses with a physical location, the city is the strongest audience. A local connection in the video, city channels and local partnerships bring reach that actually walks through the door.
Borrow reach
An appearance on a channel that already has your audience is the fastest route to new followers. City channels such as @berlin or @koln_de reach more people in one day than most business accounts do in a year.
What costs reach without you noticing
The most common reasons why accounts don't grow are not technical: irregularity (a three-week break costs more than three weeks of posting brings), gloss without substance (pretty pictures that say nothing to anyone), bought followers (the engagement rate collapses and Instagram shows your content to even fewer people) and advertising instead of content (if all you do is sell, people swipe you away). Hashtags and posting times, which a lot is written about, on the other hand decide almost nothing.
Do it yourself or have it managed?
Doing it yourself works if someone in the business has the time and enjoys being in front of the camera. Allow three to five hours a week for planning, filming, editing, publishing and replying. If that time isn't there, the account becomes irregular, and that is exactly what costs reach.
Management makes sense when the account should grow predictably without anyone in-house having to find the headspace for it. It doesn't have to be all or nothing: some hand over only the ads, others the entire account. How this works with us is explained on the page Instagram management & account management.
What does it cost to have your account managed?
There is no flat rate, and anyone who quotes you one doesn't know your account. What management costs depends on how often content is produced, whether community management is included and whether ads are running. We explain the factors in the guide What does social media marketing cost?. You'll get a concrete offer after a quick look at your account in the free intro call.
How we know this
We run our own city channels in 16 cities, from @hamburg with 676,000 followers to @wien_eu, and have been producing reels every day for years for businesses in every industry. Everything above is not something we read about, it is something we have tried out thousands of times. If you want your account to work like this, we'll take it over: Instagram management in full or just the ads. And your content can also run on the city channel of your city.
How to link this visibility to a concrete reason to visit is shown in the food and drink example Instagram marketing for restaurants.
When choosing an additional place to publish, the guide City channel or influencer distinguishes between follower count, views and a suitable community.
